Melvin Liles was born November 1, 1932 in Porum (Muskogee County) Oklahoma. Melvin Liles passed away December 10, 2020 in Henderson, Texas. Melvin was born to the parentage of Ernest and Elsie Liles. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, youngest sister Wilma Jean Stickley of Mesquite, Texas and wife of 45 years Vesta Robertson Liles. Melvin's siblings are Herb Liles, Fresno, California; Harlan Liles, Manteca, California and Betty Lou Cochran, Hickman, California.
Melvin Truman Liles is the father of Mark Liles (Bobbi), Henderson, Texas; Victor Liles (Brenda), Emmett, Idaho; Alan Liles (Becky), National City, California and Tom Liles (Molly), Palo Verde, California.
Melvin Truman Liles was the grandfather of Michelle Kopp Reed, Danelle Bishop, Sandee King, Noah Liles and Hannah Liles. Great Grandchildren are Jake Kopp, Tanner Kopp, Dakotta Kopp, Marissa Bishop, Jocelyn King, Walter Bishop, IV, Ella King and Emma King.
Melvin was raised by migrant farmers traveling through Oklahoma and Arkansas to Central California for each harvest. Dad said he walked barefoot to school, milked cows and played basketball with a peach basket. He attended schools in Oklahoma and Salida, California. He graduated from Modesto High School in 1947- 1948.
Melvin Truman Liles was married 45 years to Vesta Robertson Liles in Salida, California at the Assembly of God. Melvin and Vesta started their own family of "4" boys in Manteca, California. He was a Carpenter/ General Contractor over 50 years in the California Central Valley. He lived in Manteca until health issues relocated him to Henderson,Texas in 2019. Both Melvin and Vesta passed at their son Mark's home in Henderson, Texas.
Melvin and Vesta raised their "4 Sons" in Manteca, California, attended church at 1st Assembly of God. Melvin encouraged his sons with sports which included basketball, football, and baseball. He enjoyed playing adult league basketball and baseball. He was always seen supporting youth sports in the community. Melvin's "Joy" was seeing his granddaughters Michelle, Danelle and Sandee play basketball and softball at East Union High School. Because of his support East Union High School gave him a Lifetime Pass to all athletic events.
His hobby was race horses. He owned and bred Thoroughbreds. His last race was for 88th birthday at Louisiana Downs, November 2020. His favorite bets were on the 2, 5, and 7.
Since his health issues, he enjoyed games on TV, visits from family, when able attended Bar None Cowboy Church, Tatum, Texas. he loved his Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists with Christus Good Shepherd Home Health, Marshall, Texas. His last care was lovingly provided by East Texas Hospice.
Graveside Services will take place at a later date in Antlers, Oklahoma.
Grandpa and Great Grandpa will forever be missed. Loved by nieces and nephews from Texas to California.
