Lola McDonald
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lola Faye McDonald of Gary, TX on May 6, 2024. Lola was born February 5, 1941, in Pipestone, MN to Peter and Gertrude (VanBeek) Hulzebos and grew up on a nearby farm. She graduated from Pipestone High School in 1959 and soon thereafter completed Nursing School in Mitchell, SD.
Lola married her first love, Dale Trulock, on August 26, 1961, in Lake Benton, MN. They started their married life together in Minnesota where their sons David and Craig were born. When the boys were young, Dale and Lola moved the family to Piedmont, SD. Lola worked the bulk of her long career as a night nurse at the Hospital in Sturgis, SD, where asking to take time off during the Motorcycle Rally was frowned upon as the hospital needed “all hands-on deck.” Working as a night nurse allowed Lola to be home during the day to raise all her boys.
Within a few years of losing her first husband, Lola attended a church-sponsored event where Ronald McDonald and his young sons Ryon and Aaron came into her life. Ron and Lola married December 9, 1986. They stayed in Piedmont until Lola retired from nursing in 2005 in order to travel with Ron to his many work locations as an iron worker. In later years they spent winters on Lake Murvaul in Gary, TX and summers on Angostura Reservoir near Hot Springs, SD.
During her long nursing career, Lola was known as a compassionate care provider with a big heart for her patients. She was an avid reader and a dog lover. She spent many happy hours in her flower and vegetable gardens and was known to enjoy a quiet evening fishing from their dock on Lake Murvaul. Lola will be most remembered as the best Mom David, Craig and Aaron could have asked for and who all miss her dearly.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents Peter and Gertrude Hulzebos, husband Dale Trulock, sister Eleanor Klostergaard, brother Lanny Hulzebos, an infant brother Perry and stepson Ryon.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Ron McDonald; children, David (Sue) Trulock of Rapid City, SD; Craig (Teresa) Trulock of Kooskia, ID; Aaron (Cindy) McDonald of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Connor and Hunter Trulock, Dessi, Noraa and Gunner McDonald and great-granddaughter Serenity. She is also survived by her sister Myrna (Ardell) Heyl of Tunas, MO; brother, Ronny (Shannon) Hulzebos of Harrisburg, SD; and sister-in-law, Valerie Hulzebos of Osceola, NE.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date in South Dakota.
