EVELYN DODEAN MORRIS
1937 - 2023
" lf I can help somebody, as I travel along
lf I can help somebody, with a word or song
lf I can help somebody, from doing wrong
No my living shall not be in vain"
Evelyn Dodean Morris transitioned to her heavenly home on August 15, 2023 at the age of 86. Evelyn, affectionately known as "Baba" by family and friends was born on April 11, 1937 in Marshall, Texas to her loving parents Bonnell Edwards and Nadley Morris, who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Bonnie Jean (Morris) Thomas and brother James L. Morris and nieces LaNette Morris and Brenda Nelson.
Evelyn accepted Christ at a young age and attended various churches with her parents. She graduated from Pemberton High School in 1954 with a keen interest in mathematics. Because of her focused, organized, logical, methodical routine nature, mathematics was an ideal field of study. Undergraduate studies were completed at Bishop College and graduate studies at Prairie View A&M University. Evelyn was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority during her collegiate years.
Later, Evelyn's passion to share her knowledge and the wonders of math initiated her teaching career. For 34 years, Evelyn taught math in various Texas lndependent School districts including Lamesa, Kilgore and Marshall. While teaching Algebra, students were encouraged to maintain high standards, seek excellence and meet challenges with confidence. No shortcuts were allowed.
Outside of work, Evelyn enjoyed her privacy and spending time with people she loved the most- her family. Family was a priority in her life. If she could help in any manner to encourage or cheer one on, she would. Although some encouragement resembled a "reprimand", it was all done in "love". She was a "no-nonsense" individual who wanted the best for everyone.
Evelyn came from a long line of outstanding culinary-masters, she loved gardening, and she was a historian rich with her family’s history. Additionally, she was strong in her faith and was not afraid to share the Gospel with all those she came in contact with.
Evelyn leaves to cherish her memories - 1st generation nieces and nephews: Felton Thomas (Marshall, TX), Shu Shun Thomas (Austin, TX), Beverly (Morris) Sanders (Oakland, CA), and Anthony Morris (Antioch, CA).
Relatives and friends…

A special note of appreciation to her lifelong friend Nina Jo Hodge (Marshall, TX), who was a faithful and caring friend, who checked-in on her regularly, prepared meals, and most of all – over the years, she was there in her time of need.
Don’t think of her as gone away her journey’s just begun, life holds so many facets this earth is only one. Just think of her as resting from the sorrows and the tears in a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days and years. Think how she must be wishing that we could know today how nothing but our sadness can really pass away. And think of her as living in the hearts of those she touched… for nothing loved is ever lost and she was loved so much. Ellen Brenneman
