Doris J. Pilot Varnado was born August 22, 1946, in Marshall, Texas to the union of Richard and Ozetta Pilot. Doris was the youngest of eleven (11) children, and she attended church regularly as a child, and accepted Christ at an early age.
Doris received her formative education in the Marshall Public School system. After graduating from H.B. Pemberton High School in 1964, she moved to Los Angeles, CA where she continued her education at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). While at UCLA, she became a member of the Illustrious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Also, Doris attended Los Angeles Community College where she received her Associates Degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Business Administration. She later went on to complete her bachelor’s degree in Organization Management at Paul Quinn College, Dallas Texas.
Doris was employed by the United States Postal Services more than thirty (30) years between California and Texas in various capacities, until retiring as a supervisor in 2002.
Doris attended “The Historical Victory Baptist Church” in Los Angeles, CA where it became her official church home. She was a true and unwavering Christian who made service to the Lord a high priority. Her services ranged from membership in the usher board, participating in bible study, and missionary work throughout the community. After relocating back to Texas, she joined Beth Eden Baptist Church in Fort Worth, where she became a faithful member involved in the usher board ministry and received a national certification as an Usher Board Instructor. She was recognized for her dedication to the Seniors on the Move group which provides community service to the Sick and Shut in, as well as the less fortunate.
Doris met and married her husband, Dr. James Varnado, Jr on October 5, 1995 and they were married for 30 years; and remained together until God called her home. Doris truly lived a full life and dearly loved her entire family. In 1980, Doris gave birth to her only child with Carl Manning Sr., a beautiful daughter, Ms. Carla Taylor of Fort Worth, Texas.
Doris went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 12,2025. She was proceeded in death by her parents; five brothers, Richard Pilot Jr. (Queenie), Darvis Pilot, Herbert Pilot, Charles Pilot, and Willie Pilot (Mary); four sisters Norma Lee Speck (half-sister), Pearlene McLin, Mildred (O.C) Boyd and Peggy Pilot and two in laws Ella Marie Varnado and Johnathan Varnado.
She leaves behind to mourn her passing, her devoted her husband Dr. James Varnado Jr., one daughter Carla Manning Taylor (Kerrie); three grandchildren Breana Walton Robinette (Kyler), Keri Taylor, and Ashlynn Taylor; two sisters Bernice Pilot Whitaker and Helen Pilot Bailey; and special nieces who visited often during her illness, Shelia, Kay, Shaunaye and Yvette. A brother-in-law, Dr. Stanford Varnado (Angela) and two sisters-in-law Stella Varnado Martin and Linda Varnado Victorian. Numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends. She also leaves behind to mourn her passing, her best friend Barbara Warren to cherish her memory.
